February Birthstone – Amethyst
The word “amethyst” is derived from the Greek word “améthystos” meaning “not intoxicated”. Legend says that Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, was insulted and declared that the next person he saw would be devoured by his tigers. Unfortunately, a woman named Amethyst was on her way to worship at the Temple of Diana when she crossed paths with Dionysus. Amethyst requested help from Diana, who transformed her into a clear crystal just before the beasts devoured her. In anger, Dionysus poured wine over the crystal, creating its purple color.
Amethysts have been used since ancient times due to the belief that they provide the wearer mental clarity during waking hours and bring soothing dreams while sleeping. It is believed that amethyst crystals aid those with various types of addictions.
Amethysts are closely associated with the 3rd Eye Chakra and connected with the Crown Chakra. It is believed to provide an increase in intuition abilities and psychic abilities. It is also believed that amethyst crystals can help ward off negative energies and several types of psychic attacks.
