Let It Be: Trusting the Universe Without Forcing the Outcome

I was listening to “Let It Be” by the Beatles today, and those three words stayed with me.
Let it be.
I started thinking about how much energy we spend trying to make things happen. We want answers. We want movement. We want to know what we are hoping for will work out. Even when we ask the universe for guidance, we sometimes struggle to give it room to respond.
We ask for help, then keep trying to direct exactly how that help should arrive.
I use an analogy when I think about this.
Trust the Life Preserver
I often share this analogy with clients who are struggling to make things happen. Imagine you are in a boat wearing a life preserver, and you fall into the water.
You do not have to explain to the life preserver how to keep you afloat. You do not have to remind it of its purpose or convince it that you need support. It is already designed to provide that support. It knows what you need and how to accomplish that need.
All you need to do is allow yourself to float.
For me, that is what trusting the universe looks like. The support is there, even while we are frightened or unsure of what happens next. We don’t have to understand every detail of how it works to let it help us.
I believe the universe knows what each of us needs. Whether you call that guidance God, Spirit, or the universe, there is wisdom beyond what we can see from where we are standing.
The difficult part is allowing ourselves to trust it.
When We Keep Trying to Force Things
We often have a very specific picture of how life should unfold.
This opportunity needs to happen. That person needs to respond. The answer needs to come this week. If things move outside those expectations, we begin to worry that something has gone wrong.
Sometimes we push harder because waiting feels uncomfortable. We revisit the same question, look for more reassurance, or try to decide before we feel ready.
There is a question worth asking in those moments:
Am I taking a useful step, or am I trying to make the uncertainty go away?
There are things we can do. We can prepare, reach out, have an honest conversation, and follow through on our responsibilities. Once we have done what is ours to do, there is also a point where we can allow things to unfold.
We don’t need to keep pulling at something simply because it hasn’t happened yet.
Allow Room for What You Cannot See
Trusting the universe asks us to leave room for an answer that may look different from the one we imagined.
We may be focused on one opportunity while something else deserves our attention. We may want an immediate answer when we need more time to understand what we are asking for.
I believe the universe sees beyond the part of life we are looking at right now. That doesn’t mean waiting will always feel easy or that we will get everything we want. It means we can allow for the possibility that our view is incomplete.
We can have a direction without deciding every detail of the journey.

What Can You Let Be Today?
Think about something you have been trying to force.
Have you taken the steps available to you? Have you said what you needed to say? Is there something useful left to do, or are you going over it again because you want certainty?
Perhaps today you can give yourself permission to pause.
You can still care about the outcome. You can still have hopes and make plans. You can also trust that you do not have to manage every part of what comes next.
I think of that life preserver. We do not have to keep telling it to hold us up. We can let ourselves feel the support that is already there.
Sometimes the next step is to take a breath, trust the universe, and let it be.
