What Is Clairsentience? How Spirit Communicates Through Feeling

A male psychic medium receiving a clairsentient impression through emotion during a reading

Some messages from Spirit arrive as images.  Others are heard as words, names, or music. But sometimes a message is experienced as a feeling.

A sudden wave of love may fill your chest.  An unexpected sadness may appear even though you were feeling fine moments earlier.  You might feel pressure in your throat, heaviness in your heart, or an emotion that does not seem connected to anything happening in your life.

This form of intuitive communication is called clairsentience.

Clairsentience means “clear feeling.”  It is the ability to receive intuitive or spiritual information through emotions, physical sensations, and changes in energy.

For many mediums, clairsentience is an important part of communicating with Spirit.  The feeling itself may provide information about a loved one’s personality, relationships, experiences, or physical condition.

The challenge is learning how to recognize the impression, understand what it means, and distinguish it from your own emotions.

What Is Clairsentience?

Clairsentience is one of the primary psychic senses, commonly called the clairs.

While clairvoyance means clear seeing and clairaudience means clear hearing, clairsentience means clear feeling.  A clairsentient person receives information through emotional or physical impressions rather than through the five ordinary senses.

Clairsentient impressions may include:

  • A sudden emotion with no apparent cause
  • A physical sensation that appears unexpectedly
  • A noticeable change in the energy of a person or room
  • A strong feeling about a person or situation
  • An emotional impression connected to someone in Spirit
  • A physical sensation that may relate to a person’s life or passing

These impressions are not always dramatic.  They can be subtle and may disappear as quickly as they arrived.

The impression is only the beginning.  A medium must then determine what the feeling is communicating.

How I Experience Clairsentience

In my work as a psychic medium and rescue medium, clairsentient information often appears suddenly.

I may feel a wave of grief, pride, regret, relief, or affection that does not match what I was experiencing a moment earlier.  The emotion can carry a particular quality that makes it feel connected to someone else.

For example, I might suddenly feel overwhelming pride while communicating with a loved one in Spirit.  The feeling may suggest that the person wants to acknowledge an accomplishment or let the client know that they are aware of something important happening in the client’s life.

At other times, the information may arrive as a physical sensation.  I may feel pressure, tightness, discomfort, warmth, or heaviness in a particular area of my body.

These sensations can sometimes help identify a medical condition or something related to how a person passed.  They may also represent an important experience from the person’s life.

I do not assume that every sensation has one predetermined meaning.  I describe what I am receiving and allow the person sitting with me to validate or clarify its significance.

That validation is an important part of mediumship.

Emotional and Physical Clairsentience

Clairsentience generally appears in two closely related ways.

Emotional impressions

A medium may briefly experience an emotion associated with a person in Spirit.

This could include:

  • Love
  • Grief
  • Pride
  • Regret
  • Relief
  • Fear
  • Joy
  • Loneliness
  • Peace

The emotion may reveal something about the person’s personality, their relationship with the client, or the message they want to communicate.

A feeling of regret, for example, might indicate that the person wants to acknowledge something left unresolved.  A feeling of peace may communicate that the person is no longer suffering.

The emotion should not simply be declared as fact.  It must be considered alongside the other information being received.

Physical impressions

Clairsentience can also produce temporary physical sensations.

A medium might experience:

  • Pressure in the chest
  • Tightness in the throat
  • Heaviness in the limbs
  • Tingling or warmth
  • A sudden chill
  • A headache or pressure around the head
  • Difficulty catching a full breath

These sensations do not have universal definitions.

Pressure in the throat might relate to something a person was unable to say, but it could also represent an illness, difficulty speaking, or something about the person’s passing.

Context matters.

A responsible medium does not diagnose medical conditions from these sensations.  The impression is communicated as part of the reading and offered for validation.

Any new, persistent, or concerning physical symptom should always be evaluated medically rather than assumed to have a spiritual cause.

Clairsentience Versus Psychic Empathy

Clairsentience and psychic empathy are closely connected, but they are not necessarily identical.

Psychic empathy is commonly described as sensing or absorbing the emotions of living people.  An empath may walk into a room and immediately recognize tension, sadness, excitement, or discomfort.

Clairsentience is broader.  It involves receiving information through feeling and may relate to:

  • A living person
  • A location
  • A situation
  • An object
  • A person in Spirit

Empathy allows you to feel what someone else may be experiencing.  Clairsentience turns that feeling into intuitive information.

Some people experience both.  They may naturally sense the emotions of others and also receive emotional or physical impressions during spiritual communication.

Neither ability requires you to carry another person’s emotions.  Learning to observe a feeling without absorbing it is an essential part of discernment and energetic boundaries.

Is It My Emotion or a Clairsentient Impression?

This is one of the most important questions in mediumship.

Your own emotions usually have a recognizable connection to your life.  They may relate to a conversation, memory, relationship, concern, or event from your day.

A clairsentient impression often feels different because it arrives suddenly and without an obvious personal cause.

When an unexpected feeling appears, pause and ask:

  1. What was I feeling immediately before this appeared?
  2. Did anything in my life trigger this emotion?
  3. Did the feeling build gradually, or did it arrive all at once?
  4. Does the emotion feel familiar to me?
  5. Is other intuitive information arriving with it?

One unexpected emotion does not automatically indicate communication from Spirit.  Look for context, supporting information, and validation.

Discernment develops through observation and experience.  It should never be replaced by the assumption that every feeling has a spiritual origin.

Sometimes sadness is grief.  Sometimes fear is anxiety.  Sometimes exhaustion, stress, medication, illness, or lack of sleep affects how we feel.

Being spiritually open also means remaining grounded in everyday reality.

Clairsentience Versus Anxiety

Anxiety and clairsentience can both produce strong emotional and physical sensations, which can make them difficult to distinguish.

Anxiety often builds around worry, uncertainty, or a repeated pattern of thought.  It may cause the mind to search for danger or imagine different outcomes.

A clairsentient impression is usually more contained.  It may appear suddenly, communicate a particular piece of information, and then fade.

Clairsentience does not usually create an ongoing cycle of fearful thoughts.

When you are unsure, return to what you know:

  • Identify what you were feeling before the sensation appeared.
  • Look for an ordinary emotional or physical explanation.
  • Do not make major decisions based on one impression.
  • Give the feeling time to pass.
  • Record the experience and look for later validation.

If anxiety or strong emotions become persistent, disruptive, or difficult to manage, prioritize professional support and personal well-being.  Spiritual practices should support your health, not replace appropriate care.

Signs You May Be Clairsentient

You may have a strong clairsentient ability if you frequently:

  • Sense the emotional atmosphere of a room immediately
  • Experience sudden emotions that do not seem connected to you
  • Feel physical sensations while thinking about someone
  • Notice changes in energy around certain people or places
  • Receive intuitive information through your body
  • Feel the presence of Spirit before seeing or hearing anything
  • Know that something feels right or wrong without immediately knowing why

These experiences alone do not prove that someone is clairsentient.  They may, however, indicate that feeling is one of the primary ways the person processes intuitive information.

How to Develop Clairsentience Safely

Clairsentience does not need to be forced.  Development begins with becoming more aware of your own emotional state.

Establish your emotional baseline.

Before meditating or attempting intuitive work, pause and identify what you are already feeling.

Ask yourself:

  • What emotions am I experiencing?
  • Where do I feel them in my body?
  • What may have caused them?

This creates a baseline.  If something changes suddenly, you are more likely to recognize it.

Observe without interpreting immediately

When a new feeling appears, notice it before assigning meaning to it.

You might record:

  • The emotion or sensation
  • Where you felt it
  • How quickly it appeared
  • What you were doing at the time
  • Any images, words, names, or memories that accompanied it

The meaning may become clearer when more information arrives.

Ask for one clear impression.

If you are practicing in a grounded setting, ask for one gentle and understandable impression.

Do not ask to feel everything.  Clear communication does not need to be intense.

Notice the first emotion or physical sensation that appears.  Record it without trying to make it fit a particular answer.

Look for validation

Accuracy is developed through validation.

If you receive an impression during a practice reading, describe the sensation honestly.  Do not add details that you did not receive.

Instead of saying, “Your loved one died from a heart attack,” you might say:

I am feeling sudden pressure in my chest.  Does that connect with this person or something they experienced?

That leaves room for the recipient to recognize the information without being led toward a particular answer.

Closing Your Energy Afterward

You should not feel emotionally overwhelmed or drained after intuitive work.

When you finish, take a moment to close the connection.

Place your feet firmly on the floor and take several slow breaths.  Acknowledge that the communication has ended. Imagine any emotions or sensations that do not belong to you gently leaving your energy.

You might say:

I release anything that is not mine.  I am grounded, protected, and fully present in my own energy.

Then return your attention to your surroundings.  Drink water, move your body, or step outside for a few minutes.

Spiritual boundaries are not based on fear.  They help create a clear beginning and ending to the work.

Can Anyone Experience Clairsentience?

Many people experience intuitive feelings at different times in their lives.  Some notice them only occasionally, while others receive much of their intuitive information this way.

Having strong emotions does not automatically make someone clairsentient.  The important distinction is whether the feeling provides information that can be recognized or validated.

Like every psychic ability, clairsentience requires patience, grounding, discernment, and personal responsibility.

The goal is not to become more emotionally overwhelmed.  It is to understand the information being communicated through feeling.

Final Thoughts

Clairsentience is one of the ways Spirit communicates beyond ordinary words.

A feeling may carry love, recognition, regret, reassurance, or evidence of a shared experience.  A physical sensation may help a medium understand something about a person’s life or passing.

But receiving the feeling is only the first step.

Good mediumship requires us to observe, communicate honestly, seek validation, and remain grounded.  Not every emotion is a spiritual message, and not every sensation needs an immediate interpretation.

With practice and discernment, clairsentience can become a clear and meaningful part of spirit communication.
