The Dark Side of Mediumship: My Haunting Experience at Madrid’s Most Haunted Museum

The Reality of Seeing Spirits: It’s Not All Rainbows and Puppy Dogs
Hello Followers!
If you are unaware, I am a pretty active user on Reddit, especially on the r/Psychic and r/Medium subreddits. I regularly respond to questions to offer insights for those looking to develop and enhance their gifts. One common question I see is: ‘How can I see spirits? What many do not realize is that when you have the ability to see spirits, they too can see you! I often reply with a famous quote by Friedrich Nietzsche: ‘And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes back into you.’ This truth cannot be escaped. Having mediumship abilities is not all rainbows and puppy dogs! In fact, a recent trip to Spain revealed just how intense mediumship can be
A Haunting Encounter at Madrid’s Reina Sofia Museum: The Spirits Behind the Art
During our trip, we attended a tour of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (The Reina Sofia Museum) in Madrid. The museum is one of the largest modern and contemporary art galleries, it is the home for artwork of famous artists such as Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. It is the most visited museum in Spain and the 8th most visited art museum in the world. Our tour was there to visit the famous Picasso painting, Guernica.

As we passed through security and entered the museum, I personally began to feel that things were off in the location. Our tour guide took us down a long, white walled hallway lined with windows, each enclosed by heavy iron bars, almost prison-like. While standing in the hallway, listening to the guide, I saw three apparitions—women dressed as nuns—walking toward us. While the vision did not scare me, I wondered why their energy might be associated with the museum. My gaze for some reason was drawn back to the hallway windows, except this time they were different. I could see several men looking down on us from the glass behind the bars. Who could these spirits be? Almost immediately I began to feel a bit lightheaded and heard one of the spirits exclaim “He can see us”. They weren’t trying to harm me, but the energy they drained was overwhelming. I had never felt such powerful spirits, nor have I experienced that many at one time. As I was struggling to listen to our guide, she began to explain the history of the location.
The Dark History of the Reina Sofia Museum: From Hospital to Haunted Landmark
The museum’s location has a long history prior to becoming the Reina Sofia Museum In the mid-16th century, King Phillip II decided to consolidate the local hospital, almshouses, and charitable organizations into one central location. Thus, the Hospital de Atocha was built in Madrid, opening in the early 1800s.
While constructed with the intention of healing the sick, the hospital became more of a state prisonlike institution. The mentally ill, orphaned children and the poor without any means of financial support to be confined to the hospital at the expense of the State in order to prevent outbreaks of common diseases of the time such as cholera, bubonic plague and the Black Death. It is understood that as many as 18,000 “patients” called this hospital home.
In 1980, the first renovations and an expansion began on the property since the hospital cease operations in 1969. It was during this construction that a gruesome discovery was made. Workers in the basement unearthed several shackles and chains as well as several human skulls. In addition, several mummified bodies were located.
Remember the three nuns I witnessed earlier; well they were actually found in 1990! During a second reconstruction, the bodies of three nuns were found in a hospital chapel. Those nuns were re-interred on the grounds, specifically beneath the front threshold of the museum…right around where I witnessed them!
Many are unaware there are many others who are buried under the museum. Some who work there have seen apparitions of former patients, heard screams and experienced door slamming without explanation. Consequently, the Reina Sofia Museum is one of the most haunted locations in the country of Spain!
Unveiling the Spirits of Guernica: How the Museum’s Haunted Past Echoes in Picasso’s Masterpiece

As we continued to tour the museum, I continued to be energetically attacked by the spirits. No matter how much protective “armor” I conjured, they continued to drain my energy making me nauseous at one point. If I had not been with a tour group I would have exited the building as quickly as possible.
Finally we came upon our goal, viewing the famous painting Guernica, which represents the suffering inflicted by the city of Guernica during a horrific bombing that occurred during the Spanish Civil War. The painting, although it’s subject matter was about Spain, Picasso refused to have the painting returned to Spain until the country was a republic again. In 1992 Guernica was placed in its current location in a museum gallery specifically designed for the work.
Not only is Guernica’s location in Spain fitting, but its placement in the former hospital is symbolic. While viewing this impressive work of art, the surrounding spirits explained how Guernica’s figures also represent themselves and the pain, torture and criminal acts they experienced during their time in the hospital. The figure on the right side of the painting represents the mentally ill, while the dead child on the left represents the orphans who passed away on the site. The central figures represent the overall anguish experienced with the hospital.
The Dual Nature of Mediumship: Balancing the Rewards and Challenges
Upon leaving the building, the feelings of uneasiness and sense of dread quickly passed although it would be several hours before I felt like myself again. After a three-hour afternoon nap I finally felt 100% from the experience.
While being a psychic medium is incredibly rewarding, it comes with its challenges. As with everything, there is good and bad…ying and yang. Infrequently, we as psychics fail to discuss the negative side of our abilities and times we have negative experiences.
